London Diamond Bourse

London Diamond Bourse (LDB)

Overview

The London Diamond Bourse (LDB) is the UK's leading diamond trading floor. It is a member of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses and has been in operation for over 75 years. The organization's members are bound by a historic code of conduct which includes integrity, moral obligation, and the highest standards of trade and best business practices. Its primary purpose is to provide regulation and support to the UK diamond industry while also inspiring consumer confidence in the trade.

History

The London Diamond Bourse first opened its doors in 1940, primarily as a result of the Nazi occupation of Belgium, which was then the world's leading diamond trading hub. Many diamond merchants who fled to the UK established the London Diamond Bourse inside Mrs Cohen’s Cafe in Greville Street, near Hatton Garden. Over the years, the organization has moved several times to accommodate its growth, and it currently resides at 100 Hatton Garden.

Services and Membership

The LDB offers a range of services to its members, including the opportunity to network with other jewellers and specialist members of the trade. Members also benefit from access to secure offices in the heart of Hatton Garden. The organization's membership is diverse, ranging from diamond traders to manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers.

The LDB also provides educational programs such as the Diamond Manufacturing Course, launched in 2024, which followed the success of the CPD Accredited Practical Diamond Knowledge (PDK) course launched in 2022.

Recognition and Awards

The LDB has received numerous recognitions and awards. Notably, Alan Cohen, a member of the LDB, received the prestigious 2024 NAJ Chair’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Jewellery Industry, symbolizing the organization's commitment to professionalism and integrity.

Social Responsibility

All members of the LDB are required to adhere to the Kimberley Process, a certification scheme aimed at preventing "conflict diamonds" from entering the mainstream rough diamond market. This demonstrates the LDB's commitment to ethical trading practices. The organization also collaborates with the National Association of Jewellers (NAJ) and the Natural Diamond Council (NDC) to address industry-wide issues.

Future

The LDB is dedicated to continually adapting and improving its services to meet the changing needs of the diamond industry. As part of this commitment, it launched the G7 Guidance Directory to provide resources and support for members navigating the G7 sanctions on Russian diamonds. The organization is also exploring ways to leverage digital technologies to enhance marketing and engagement strategies.
